What To Know About Outpatient Psychiatry

Outpatient Psychiatry Care

Do you wonder where you can find answers regarding your mental health struggles and what resources are available?

Do you feel as though you can still function in your everyday life, but you would also like some extra support from a mental health care professional?

Dr. Yarton, Dr. Ocasio, Priscilla Duerstock PA-C, Eve Kessler, APN-C, and Dr. Matthew Barnas, founder of Pelorus Elder & Behavioral Health in Raritan and Cedar Knolls, NJ, offer outpatient psychiatry schedules to accommodate your needs.

What is Outpatient vs. Inpatient Psychiatry?

You may be confused about psychiatry services because psychiatric care has strong negative connotations attached to it. You may think that traditional psychiatric services are only inpatient, with long-term stays in a hospital or facility.

With advances in mental health services in the last twenty years and the openness and acceptance of patients, providers, and the general public, outpatient mental health services have become more and more commonplace.

There are still traditional inpatient psychiatric service facilities offering an intensive program of group and individual therapy for a month or longer. However, more commonly, patients are seen in an outpatient setting.

According to Pelorus Elder & Behavioral Health, outpatient psychiatry is a much more flexible program used to treat a variety of conditions, such as:

  • Anxiety disorder
  • Depression
  • Disorders of sleep pattern
  • Different types of dementia
  • Bipolar disorder

We may see you as little as once every few weeks or as needed for outpatient sessions. We offer services such as:

  • Medication management
  • Telehealth visits
  • TMS or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Our facilities offer video visits for those who aren’t able to leave their homes. Telehealth visits may interest you if you desire to remain in the comfort of your home.

TMS is a safe, noninvasive treatment that uses magnetic stimulation to treat the parts of the brain affected by depression, anxiety and OCD. Pelorus offers free consultations for TMS.
